Here is how to use the ATM like a pro
1. Avoid using expired or damaged cards
As an ATM card holder you should be aware of the expiry date of your card and ensure you contact your bank and get a new card before it expires. You should also protect your card from being damaged by ensuring the chip on the card is protected at all times. Using expired or damaged card on ATM will make the machine swallow your card with its attendant avoidable embarrassment.
2. Guide your PIN jealously
Your pin is like a secret password to be used to perform transactions on your account. Ensure you create a PIN that can never be guessed by anyone, avoid using your birthdate, wedding anniversary or any other personal event that is known by anyone to create your password. Once you have created one immediately your debit or credit card is handed over to you by your bank you should avoid sharing it with any one. Do not write it down, keep your PIN a secret.
3. Ensure you insert your card correctly
Your ATM card has an arrow sign on it to show you in what direction the card should go into the machine. Ensure you are not in too much hurry not to observe this before inserting your card in the machine otherwise the machine damage your card or even swallow it.
4. Avoid ATM in suspicious locations.
It is important to be aware of the surroundings where ATMs are located before using one. Avoid using ATM terminals outside of banking premises or in stand-alone locations such locations are prone to fraudsters who may have inserted chips to steal your card detail and eventually steal your money
5. Ensure your account is funded for withdrawal
Another way to use ATM like an expert it to check your account balance if you are not sure of it before attempting to make withdrawals. Several attempt to make withdrawals of amount not available in your account may result in the machine damaging or swallowing your card. Also ensure that you know the fees (N65 on 3rd withdrawal on other bank ATM) applicable on your withdrawals as this may affect your available balance
6. Use correct password
The ATM automatically perceives the card you are trying to use as a stolen card if you attempt using wrong PIN more than once. Ensure you know your PIN and memorize it to avoid unnecessary embarrassment when using the ATM.
7. Follow the direction on the ATM screen.
Not all ATMs are the same so ensure you read the screen direction before you proceed to the next step while using the machine. Some machine will require you to select the language options before you proceed with your transaction while some will not. Other will request if you want a receipt while others may not. So ensure you follow the online screen direction before you proceed with your transaction.
8. Remove your card immediately after your transaction
The ATM pushes out your card after your transaction and notify you to remove your card. It also gives you a few seconds to do so otherwise the machine assumes you have forgotten your card and will take it back.
