Gunmen, today attacked a bullion van moving from Enugu to Abakaliki, the Ebonyi state capital, at Ohaukwu local government of the state and killed four Policemen escorting the vehicle to the State capital.
It was gathered that the robbers killed the police officers who were in an escort van, while attempting to intercept the bullion van at busy Junction where the state government is currently building a flyover.
The police officers’ escort was hit first by the armed robbers in a bid to intercept the billion van which was eventually shot at the tire.
The four Police officers were killed in the process while two other of their colleagues sustained various degree of injuries.
Ebonyi state Commissioner of police CP Philip Maku, who was contacted confirmed the incident.
According to him, the robbers trailed the van from Enugu state but were not able to loot the van as the driver managed to drive the van out of the area.
“They damaged one of the tires of the Bullion van but the driver was able to escape with the van. They could not give chase to the van as the driver was driving towards the Military checkpoint ahead” The state CP said.
The CP said the two injured Policemen have been taken to hospital for treatment while the deceased have been deposited at the mortuary.
Maku said the Police has launched a manhunt for the fleeing robbers.
Correspondent reports that the ongoing construction at the Ezzamgbo junction led to steady traffic jam which gave the Robbers opportunity to attack the van.
