Meet the new UBA group ED, Finance & Risk Management – Ugochukwu Nwaghodoh

UBA group recently announced the appointment of Ugochukwu Nwaghodoh as the new Executive Director Finance and Risk Management

Ugo has over 28 years’ experience, most of which was spent in diverse leadership positions and more recently as the Group Chief Financial officer of UBA Plc. A position he held until his recent appointment as Executive Director.

Before now, Ugo who joined UBA in 2004, rose through the ranks of Strategy and performance management, Corporate Business development and later became Group Chief Compliance officer and more recently the Group financial controller. He had previously worked as a manager in Deloitte Nigeria and PricewaterhouseCoopers in Nigeria and Kenya.

He was the Manager, Assurance and Business Advisory Services

He conducted audit, business advisory, fraud investigation, design & implementation of internal controls for various banks and non-financial services institutions, engaged senior management of clients on business strategy, operations and accounting.

He was seconded to Kenya for two years and honed his audit and advisory capabilities, especially on the basis of the International Accounting Standards (IAS).

Ugo as UBA Group Chief Compliance Officer, Feb 2008 to Sep 2008

He developed and managed the Group’s overall compliance program, covering customer acceptance, regulation, training, ethics, professionalism, corporate governance and anti-money laundering.

He engineered the turnaround in the Group’s compliance function and worked with renowned consultants to develop a framework and system of international standard.

He was responsible for the accurate and timely preparation of Group Financial Statements, as well as provide detailed analysis and commentary on them. He pioneered the implementation of IFRS in the bank and developed the economic capital management system in collaboration with. the bank’s risk management group.

He coordinated the the corporate rating of the bank, provided technical support to CFO’s of subsidiary businesses, as well as developed and drove the Group’s investor relations strategy.

Overall responsibility for performance management, regulatory management, financial control, investor relations, financial reporting, portfolio investment and tax management functions across the Group.

Over the years spanning his career, Ugo has won several awards and has been a Serial winner of the Nigerian Banking Industry “CFO of the Year” for 2015, 2016 and 2017; Nigerian Banking Industry “Finance Team of the year” for 2015, 2016, 2017, and 2018; UBA CEO Award for Effective Cost Management among other awards. He was also the Best Graduating Student, Faculty of Sciences, University of Ibadan in 1992.

He boasts of a very rich educational background with numerous professional qualifications including an MSC in Risk Management from the Stern School of Business, New York; MSC Finance & Management, Cranfield University; BSc in Human Nutrition, University of Ibadan; and is also a Member of several professional bodies including: Institute of Directors of Nigeria, Fellow Institute of Accountants of Nigeria, Chartered Institute of Taxation of Nigeria, Chartered Institute of Stockbrokers of Nigeria and a host of others.

Ugo is a seasoned financial analyst and as the Executive Director, Finance & Risk Management for the United Bank for Africa, he will provides leadership across the Finance function and will be in charge of the risk management process of the Group across its pan-African and global operations.

Ugo’s broad experience spans, assurance, advisory, financial control, strategy and business transformation, investor relations, mergers and acquisition, business integration and project management.
