Zenith Bank Plc, Nigeria’s top tier 1 lender and the second biggest in balance sheet size has proved that it is a gender-neutral employer in the Nigerian Banking Industry. This is evident in the bank’s employees mix and going by its ability to provide conducive working environment for both male and female staff.
Gender sensitivity refers to being considerate for the opposite gender. Male or female. Being appreciative of the fact that men and women think and act differently and providing enabling environment for both genders to thrive. Going by the figures from the 2019 annual report of banks, a review of the gender mix of Stanbic IBTC, FCMB, UBA, Zenith, UBA, GTBank Union, Access and Fidelity Bank. Zenith bank came out top in gender sensitivity with 48 percent of the total Staff strength of 5,982 (which includes management staff) being female while male makes up the 52%. Union Bank with staff strength of 2,362 has the lowest Employees mix with the ratio 61:39 Male to Female.
Union Bank was closely followed by FCMB with total staff strength of 3,891 has employee’s composition of ratios 60:40 Male to Female and Stanbic IBTC with total employee strength of 2,936 has staff composition of 58:42 Male to Female. Fidelity Bank has employee mix of 55:45 of their total staff strength of 2,804. UBA with the highest staff strength of 13,157 has the same employee mix of 54:46 Male to Female a, GTBank and Access Bank with staff strengths of 3,509 and 5,870, respectively.
Looking at staff in management position in these banks, GTBank clearly has the most gender sensitive mix at the top with 22 of the total 56 management staff being female representing 39%. Zenith Bank has 20 females of the 59 staff in management position representing 34%. Stanbic IBTC has 23 females of the total 80 staff in management position representing 29% while Access Bank has 20 females of the total 72 staff in management representing 28%.
Union Bank, FCMB, UBA and Fidelity Bank has 9,14,21 and 8 females in management positions of their total management staff of 34,66,99,44 representing 26%, 21%,21% and 18% respectively.
